Keep Senior Safety Top of Mind This Winter

Winter is a great season to enjoy festive holiday gatherings, snowy landscapes, and cozy nights by the fire. It can also be a particularly dangerous time of the year for seniors. Icy or snowy sidewalks or stairs can be slip-and fall hazards, and seniors are much more susceptible to broken bones and serious, life-changing injuries, even from minor falls. Driving in wintery conditions can be especially difficult for seniors who may have slower reflexes and poor eyesight.

Hypothermia is another major concern for seniors, as age and chronic health conditions like diabetes and thyroid disease can restrict circulation and affect the body’s ability to maintain normal body temperatures. Prescription medications can also impact the ability to regulate temperatures. Hypothermia can lead to serious health problems such as irregular heartbeat, heart failure and kidney or liver damage, so it’s important to know what to look for.

Symptoms of Hypothermia

  • Slurred or slow speech
  • Cold feet and hands
  • Puffy or swollen face
  • Pale skin
  • Shivering or shaking
  • Confusion or sleepiness

What can you do to keep seniors safe?

If you have an elderly family member, friend or neighbor, checking on them during winter months is critically important. These are some things you can do to keep them safe:

  • Ensure walkways are cleared of ice and snow to prevent slips and falls
  • Offer to pick up groceries or run errands so they can avoid getting out on icy sidewalks and roads
  • If there are no handrails on outdoor steps, consider installing them
  • Remind them to wear warm clothing and non-skid footwear if they go outside
  • Check the thermostat to make sure it is set at 68 or above, and remind seniors to dress in warm layers, even indoors. Home temperatures between 60 and 65 that would just be mildly cool for younger people can cause hypothermia in seniors.
  • Caution against the use of space heaters as they can be fire hazards and increase the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Make sure they are staying hydrated and eating nutritious meals to keep up their energy
  • Advise them to avoid or limit alcoholic drinks as they can cause loss of body heat
