Yes, Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and private insurance generally cover short-term stays in a skilled nursing facility if certain requirements are met, including:

• A qualifying hospital stay (usually at least 3 p.m. to midnight for traditional Medicare patients). Medicare Advantage and private insurance plans do not require a 3 p.m. to midnight hospital stay to access skilled nursing services
• A physician’s order for skilled care or rehabilitation
• Admission to a Medicare- or Medicaid-certified facility
• Note that generally, Medicaid does not cover rehabilitation services in a skilled nursing facility. Medicaid may cover the cost of long-term care (not skilled care) if eligibility requirements are met.
